Financial Literacy Outline

INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL LITERACY:

In this section we will discuss why knowing financial literacy is important and different ways to manage your money to reach your future goals. One of the greatest predictors of financial stability is your relationship status to money. How does money make you feel and how does that affect your financial decisions? We’ll delve into how to categorize that relationship and how to take control of your money to feel more in control of your life. But most importantly, we will begin to decipher what you want your life to look like through goal writing and life planning activities.

CAREERS:

In this section we will discuss how your career can play a role in becoming financially secure. We will learn about salaries, 401ks, benefits, and how to negotiate pay and benefits. Nevertheless, we are definitely going to talk about some nice paying side hustle and job opportunities that are high schooler friendly. We will discuss factors to consider when choosing your career and how that might align, misalign, or realign with your future goals. 

BUDGETING:

In this section we will navigate through different types of budgeting. We will also discover the psychology behind why winging your finances can unnecessarily lead to living paycheck to paycheck, and how keeping a budget gives you the most control over your money and gets you so much closer to making your dreams a reality. 

SAVING & DEBT:

In this section we will establish the foundation of your prolonged financial health. Savings are what you pour into to fuel your future goals. It also functions as a shield for when the unpredictable storms of life happen and you need some money quickly. We will go into the importance of knowing different vehicles to save your money into and how time values principles affect how much your money is actually worth- like is my money growing slower than inflation 👀?! Additionally, we are going to talk about the antithesis of saving: debt. We will teach about debt in general, but will primarily talk about student debt and how to position yourself so that you can enter college (if you choose) with financial peace and can leave college knowing you will not have to keep paying student loans until you die. 

RETIREMENT:

Although retirement sounds like something you don’t have to think about now, starting later can actually cost you millions! In this section we will discuss what retirement planning is, and how the time you start saving greatly impacts the amount you will have at retirement. We will dive into 401ks, IRAs, social security, and investing vehicles that can merge to create your retirement income. You’ll start to think about the possibilities of your future! Are you chilling on the beach watching the waves crash on the sand, or are you traveling to every country in the world to see who has the best desserts? Because most importantly, we will start to think about what you want YOUR retirement to look like. 

INVESTING:

In this section we will learn about different types of investing vehicles including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and cryptocurrencies. We will discuss how investing can help you reach your goals, help with retirement, and be an added source of income. We will demystify the grandeur of investing and explain how to start now in high school. 

INSURANCE:

Imagine going through life protected against every single bad situation?!  Well we can’t be protected against everything but insurance can financially help us to not feel the hard hits of life. We know insurance sounds like we’re in grandpa land, but insurance becomes your force field superpower. It is your defense against the evil forces of unexpected events and tragedies that can greatly affect all of your hard work and financial security. In this section we will learn about the various types of insurance types including life, health, disability, property, and car insurance. We will dive into how insurance companies work, when you should get insurance, and how different companies have different payment types and qualifications. 

TAXES:

Paying taxes is (unfortunately) something everyone must do if we are getting paid - and honey we need to get paid! We will learn about what taxes are, the different types, and how to file for them (and the services that can help you do so ;). We’ll also talk about some expert tips and tricks, like how the heck Trump does not pay taxes to get you primed and ready for when Uncle Sam comes knocking.

CREDIT & BANKING

To have credit, or to not have credit, that is the question.Oddly enough, there is so much controversy in the personal finance space. And we are here to make sure you have the foundation you need to make that decision for yourself. We will go into the history of credit, the different types, costs and late fees, points and rewards, how to avoid credit card debt, and tips and tricks for building credit. We will also talk about bank history, what the Fed is, and different banking services. 

FINANCIAL LITERACY OF THE FUTURE:

Okay we know you're tired of hearing about crypto, it's time to actually learn what it is! We will dive into NFTs, bitcoin, ethereum, Blockchain and Web 3.0. The future is becoming more and more digital and we want you to be well prepared and knowledgeable in these streets!
